Divine Discourse by Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba Prashanti Nilayam
Why excessive riches, which make the heart tremble? Small wages, which push desires into control, are better. There is no complete happiness. There is no complete sorrow. There is none in the world, none, none.
Why excessive riches, which make the heart tremble? Small wages, which push the desires into control, are better. There is no complete happiness. There is no complete sorrow. There are only feelings of duality on the earth. There is no complete happiness. There is no complete sorrow. There are only feelings of duality on the earth, on this earth. (Telugu poem) The Existence of God Embodiments of Love! In the sacred Bharatiya culture, from ancient times the Upanishads gave numerous messages (teachings) to man. The message of these Upanishads is eternal. It is Truth. It is permanent.
Raso Vai Saha. God is the essence of All.
The Upanishads proclaim to the world that God is the embodiment of rasa. ‘Rasa’ means God is present in all atoms and in all small particles, just like the sugar in syrup. God is present in every small particle and in every atom as the embodiment of rasa, just like the butter in milk. However, not everyone can recognize such a sacred nature. No one can comprehend the existence of God. No one can proclaim the secret of God. Just as you find the bird within the egg, we have to understand the human quality within this existence itself. This Truth can be apparent and perceived by us from the microcosm to the macrocosm. The Upanishads give direct teachings on so many matters that human beings do not understand. God's existence is proclaimed just like the sweetness in sugarcane, like the spicy taste in a chili, like the sourness in a lime, and like the fragrance in a flower. No engineer can understand this. No scientist can understand this either. All of this is the direct evidence of God's existence. We have to make the proper effort to understand such an existence. The river that flows gives so much joy. If a full tank is seen, there is so much overflowing delight. If growing crops are seen, there is so much joy. These are all direct evidence of God's existence. Direct evidence like this gives a message to man. Yet man is not making the proper effort to recognize this. So many vast experiences are seen (perceived) in this world. From the time man is born till he dies, he is gaining all types of experiences. However, he is under the delusion that all of these experiences, all that he creates, all that he fulfills, and all that he achieves, are because of his own efforts. But it is not possible for him to create these. In what way can man, who is not able to understand his nature, recognize this Divine nature which cannot be seen? Hence, everything which can be seen by the eyes, heard by the ears, thought by the mind, which moves the heart and makes one exalt, all is God's existence only. Every individual should make proper effort to recognize such a Divinity. However man of today, whatever else he understands, is simply not making the proper effort to recognize God's existence. He is wasting all the time he wants to understand matters regarding all things like a computer, or industries, or a television, or a telephone.
Know Yourself So, first and foremost, all of the Upanishads put the question, "Know yourself." (Who am I?) Know who you are. If you don’t know yourself, in what way can you know the individual in front of you? Man doesn’t know who he is, yet he questions all the people whom he meets: "Who are you? Who are you? Who are you? Who are you?" If that person in front of you asks the question, "Dear one, who are you?" he has no answer. Should such an individual be put in a mental hospital? Or, should he be called a ‘human being’? He is trying to find out about everything (outside himself). "Today, what is happening in America? What is happening in Britain? What is happening in Pakistan?" Every single person is saying those matters as if learnt by heart. However, he does not know the matter of what is happening within himself. If anyone asks, "Sir, who are you?" The person who has been asked will introduce himself by saying his name. Again if you ask, "Who are you?" he will say, "I am a doctor, doing such and such a work." If you ask again a third time, "Who are you?" he’ll say, "I’ve come from Bangalore." These are only dialogues that we speak in daily life conversation, but they are not words that convey to you the right meanings. Yet, there is no correct answer to the question, "Who are you?" Under the delusion that he is the body, man is giving the answer to these queries of where the body was born, the work that the body does, and the place where the body has come from. Yet this doesn’t convey who you really are.
The Knower of the Body The Upanishads say:
Kshetrajna Chapi Mam Viddhi. Know! I am the Indweller of all beings. (Sanskrit sloka) "Sir, you are not the body. You are the Indweller of the body. You say you are a doctor- this is only the body. That which has come from Bangalore is only the body. The name that you have told has been given to the body. The age you have said is the age of the body. You are giving all the answers regarding the body, but you are not trying to recognize the nature of the ‘Indweller of the body’." Hence, this body is only a field. You are the Indweller of the body. Who are you and who is the Indweller of this body? You are one who dwells in it. Yet, you have said your family name. You are drawing the plan of the house, but you are not telling the name of the individual inside the house. The answer of "I am the Atma" should come. What does ‘Atma’ mean? Atma is only the nature of Chaitanya (Divine Consciousness, Constant Integrated Awareness). There is no other name for this Atma. When the Vedas arose, they gave the name to the Indweller of the body as ‘I’, ‘Aham’. This word of ‘I’ is in everyone. Now, if anyone asks, "Who is Ramayya in this hall?" someone will get up saying, "I." If the second time "Who is Krishna?" is asked, the one bearing the name of Krishna will get up and say, "I am Krishna." Then again, if one says, "Who is Govinda?" someone else will get up saying, "I am Govinda." This means that each person will feel he is ‘I’, based on the body and based on the name given to the body. What was he before he was named as Rama, Krishna, or Govinda? "I am Krishna. I am Rama. I am Govinda." ‘Rama’, ‘Krishna’, ‘Govinda’ are different, but the ‘I,I’ in all three of them is their true form. The Upanishads gave the name of ‘aham’ to this. You are only You (the Atma), but you are not related to any other name. The Upanishads gave these types of messages very clearly and they dispelled the doubts of man. These are powers that are beyond human capacity. What were they calling these powers that are beyond man’s capacity? Americans called this ‘neotics’. They gave a new name to it. Man cannot see it. He cannot understand it. There is some power in man. They gave the name of ‘neotics’ to this super-human power.
Attraction Power If we recognize this in the right way, we realise that there is a power of Chaitanya in everything, from top to toe. All this is just a magnet. This means it is all happening through a sort of magnet. It is not possible for someone to create or destroy this magnet. It is this very matter that Newton mentioned: "Dear one, this magnet is not something that one can create. It also cannot be destroyed." This is:
‘That’ (Atma) is permanent, without any death and birth. ‘That’ is Eternal, with no beginning or end. ‘That’ does not die, is not born, and will not be killed. The form of Atma remains as a Witness. (Telugu poem)
Newton taught this meaning. Who is Newton? He was a great scientist. He was one who recognized that the earth has attraction power. However, it was not that gravitation was present only in the place where he was. The whole earth has this attraction power. However, a few other people questioned this: "When it is not possible to make (generate, create) this attraction power in any way, what is the use of this attraction power?" Einstein explained about this. He said, "Dear one, it is not possible to kill this and it is not possible to create it. However, it can undergo change in numerous ways. Magnet power may be changed to electricity. Electricity may be changed into light power. That light power may be changed into heat power. It may be changed into numerous forms in this way, but it is absolutely impossible for anyone to destroy it."
The Seed Is the Atma In a situation like this, who can say how God's nature is? In what way and who created the bird that is born in the egg? Who is able to create it? Then, even though that bird is small, how can it come out, breaking that egg? How big the tree grows that is born in the seed! Yet, the tree in the seed cannot be seen by any of us. When it is in that seed, we can’t see any form. However, it grows and grows and becomes a big tree. We can see numerous branches and also fruits growing on that tree. How were so many fruits contained in that small seed? This is the existence of God. (Applause)
Small in the atom, Huge in a huge thing, The Witness of everything, The Atma only is the seed. The seed is the Atma! (Sanskrit sloka)
Hence, no one can give a proper explanation for the bird contained in the egg and the tree in the seed. A few people are able to explain based on their imaginations, but there are none that can convey the path of Truth in the right way. If a spark of fire is seen, we may recognize the form of fire. If a drop of water is seen, we recall the entire Ganga River. What difference there is between a drop of water and the Ganga! Crazy fellow! It may be a difference of quantity but not quality. The Ganga is a combination of many drops of water coming together. Rain is one drop falling down after another. All the drops come together and become small streams. All these steams come together and form perennial rivers. All these rivers come together and they become the form of the ocean. Therefore, the entire form of the ocean is the form of a drop of water.
In the atom, He becomes the atom. In the huge, He is huge. Big in the big, A drop in a drop. (Telugu poem)
Let us take a small spark of fire. If this spark of fire is fanned, it will increase greatly. What is the cause for the great flames of fire? The cause is the spark of fire. So, even such a small thing, such a small form becomes so gigantic. Even objects that cannot be seen can manifest and be seen as huge forms that are apparent. In this same manner, if we want to inquire into the existence of God, we can discover His existence in each and every change that happens in this world. So, if one wants to see God manifest, we can see Him in everything.
Pashyannapi Cha Napashyati, Moodho. A fool sees, yet does not see! (Sanskrit sloka)
Even though you see everything, you are feeling, "I don’t see everything." Is there anyone more foolish than you? What is the cause for man being born and growing? He says that food is the basis for this. Who created this food? Hence, if one continues to inquire one after the other, the primordial nature can be seen clearly by us.
One Returns To Where One Has Originated There is plenty of water in the ocean today. Where did this come from? Yet, there is a basis for it. When we inquire well into its existence:
Chandrama Manaso Jataha. Chaksho Suryo Ajayata.
Moon is the presiding deity of the mind. Sun is the presiding deity of the eyes. (Sanskrit sloka)
The water in the ocean changes into vapor due to the rays of the sun. If the water in the ocean is put into the mouth, it is not possible to drink it. It is saltish. When water that is so salty turns into vapor, it becomes sweet. If the wind blows over these clouds well, one cloud joins with the others and gradually it becomes raindrops. Rain comes as single drops. Again all the drops join and go in streams. All these streams become rivers. All these rivers join and become the ocean. They were born from the sea. However, after having so many kinds of changes and so many different types of additions happen, finally it becomes the form of the ocean. Vedanta also says this:
To go back again from where it originated Is natural for all the living creatures. (Telugu poem)
It is the Truth that one returns to where one has originated. Yet man is not trying to understand this Truth. He is not understanding, "Where did I come from?" Yet, he truly doesn’t know at all where he is going.
Dead Letters Office If you write a letter and post it to a friend, on the posted cover the ‘from address’ or the ‘to address’ should be written. If it is put in the post without the ‘from address’ or the ‘to address’, where will it go? It will go to the Dead Letters Office. However, it won't reach anyone. It won't come to you and it won't reach to whom it is supposed to. So, the address is very important here. You have come (been born). You should at least find out the ‘from address’ of: "Where have I come from?" You should at least find out the ‘to address’. The ‘to address’ of "Where will I go?" is based on the actions that you do. Man of today doesn’t know the ‘from address’ and doesn’t know the ‘to address’. He is only in the Dead Letters Office! Birth and death, birth and death, birth and death:
Punarapi Maranam, Punarapi Jananam. Again death, again rebirth. (Sanskrit sloka)
Is this what we should do? We have been born as a human being, have Divinity latent, and live in Divinity, but finally what is the work that we do? What is the place we arrive at? How many times are we being born! How many times are we dying! Yet, birth and death are happening, but no one knows where they will end up. One like this is like a big thief. How? A thief committed a robbery. They put him in jail. They put him in jail, sentencing him to three months. After three months had passed, the superintendent of that jail came. He said, "Sir, tomorrow your three months will be completed. Get your plate, bag, and luggage and get ready. Go. Go home and live well." All right, the thief got up. He said, "Namaskaar. I’ll go and I’ll come back." The jail superintendent said, "Hey! You didn’t take your bag and luggage! You didn’t take your plate, your bag, or anything!" Then it seems the thief said, "Sir, why should I take them and then bring them back? I’ll come again tomorrow, isn't it?" (Laughter) This means that he won't stop robbing. He will do robberies again and will return to jail. He said, "I’ll come again tomorrow, isn't it? So why should I carry it all and go?" This is the reply of man today also. "Sir, where are you going?" "Where? I don’t know! I will die again. I will be born again." Must one be born as a human being only to recognize this truth? No, no! "I have come (been born). I arose from Atma. I must reach back again to the place of Atma." So, you have to try to recognize this place of the Atma. That (Atma) only is your existence. In the same way that are you trying to recognize the existence of God after being born as a human being, while being a human you also have to recognize the existence of Nature. Hence, first and foremost when we inquire, "Where have we come from?" the meaning is not understood. We came from the place that is incomprehensible and imperceptible to the senses. To describe this, it is said:

However, when will we understand? Truly, when we do proper actions and when we do sacred deeds, we will reach a sacred place. That sacred place is Divinity. When bad things are done, we will go to a bad place. That bad place is only the result of sins. That only is hell.
There Should Be Self-Confidence Therefore, "Will I go to hell or will I go to heaven?" These two must be asked while man is living. It is no use thinking, ‘After death, I will go wherever I go.’ There should be the confidence in him while living that, ‘Everything I do are good works.’ That true faith should arise in him. Only when that faith arises, God will love him. So where there is faith, there is Love. Where there is Love, peace will be obtained. Where peace is obtained, there we will attain bliss. Where bliss is attained, God will manifest there only. Therefore:
Where there is Faith, there is Love. Where there is Love, there is Truth. Where there is Truth, there is Peace. Where there is Peace, there is Bliss. Where there is Bliss, there is God.
So first and foremost, without faith he cannot understand God. Only if there is the faith that ‘such-and-such a lady is my mother’, that mother will love you, isn’t it? If there is the doubt, ‘Is she my mother or not?’ she will also doubt you! Hence:
Yat Bhavam Tat Bhavathi. As the feeling, so it becomes. (Sanskrit sloka)
It is said, "We are the witness to the mind. Attributes are the witness of the body. Foolishness is the witness of fools." This foolishness only is the witness to fools. In what way can one, who doesn’t have faith in himself, have faith in others? What is the use of one who doesn’t have faith in others being born in the world? So, there should be Self-confidence. Only when there is Self-confidence, will we love society also. Only when we love the society, the Lord of All (God) will love us. However, how can society love you if you don’t have love for society? Therefore, whatever house one attempts to build, first and foremost a foundation has to be laid carefully. So that foundation is confidence. We have to build the walls on this confidence. Hence, the walls of Self-satisfaction have to be built on this foundation of Self-confidence. The roof has to be laid on that. That only is Self-sacrifice (sacrifice made by the Self). You will live there only when there is Self-sacrifice. You can't live in that house without the roof. The roof can't be laid without the wall. You can’t build the wall without the foundation. Hence, Self-confidence, Self-satisfaction, Self-sacrifice, all of these are based in the Self. That Self only is Atma. The one who doesn’t have faith in the Atma can achieve nothing. If one is always a doubting Thomas, doubting Thomas, doubting Thomas, then when will doubt be overcome? We have to make this doubt distant. We have to develop a kind of faith. Only when we develop this faith:
Nammakam Anu Rendu Nainambulu Leni Andhulaina Nedu Avani Yandu
Without the two eyes of faith, People are blind in this world today. (Telugu poem)
One without this faith is equal to a blind man. He believes everything. If one thinks (has faith) that someone is an American, it is enough if the name is spoken. He will even believe that he’s the President. How did you get that faith? You are feeling that he is the President only because it came in your paper, or due to someone propagating so. All this news is only nuisance! He can write what is suitable to him. However, you have to take heart-to-heart (contact) as real news. So many different types of news are coming; good is coming and bad is coming. All of this ‘good and bad’ is not news. It is total gas! We are giving our ears to all things like this, and man of today is destroying his life. Where did your heart go? Has your heart burned up? Or, has your heart been scorched black? Has your heart fallen down? You have to foster your heart. The one who makes his heart sacred will be safe wherever he goes. Therefore, first and foremost I said… What did I say? If one has a heart that moves (a sensitive heart) one may ask, "How can I live? I don’t need any more great wealth. Even small wages are bliss for me." When will you feel like this? Trample the desires under control! It is better to have small wages. That only is the true wage. That small income is enough for us in life.
Control of the Senses Man of today is not controlling anything. Control of the senses has been completely destroyed. Where has it gone? Man has the senses that are necessary for him. These senses have to be put on the proper path. Do you know why have the eyes have been given? To see everyone? No, no! To see fully the One who resides in Kailasa (Lord Siva)! Do you know why the ears were given? To hear bad and good? No, no, no, no, no, no! To hear chanting of the Divine Name of God! Do you know why the feet were given? To wander through the lanes and alleys? No, no, no, no! To circumambulate the manifested God! It is absolutely necessary to recognize the truth of why He gave these limbs, and to conduct oneself accordingly.
From early morning, You are ready to hear with interest the gossip of the neighborhood. When the fond, sweet, and dear stories of the Lord are spoken, Why won't you join together to listen to them, O Ears? (Telugu poem)
To hear all sorts of things, man will give even twelve ears to listen, not just two ears. Yet to hear the chanting of God's Name, even the two ears will close! Why were these ears given? What is the use in having such ears? Therefore, make good use of each of the senses. This is the spiritual practice that Buddha did. In what way did Buddha do it? He saw all the great saints. He went to all of the great souls. He heard all of their teachings. He read all of the books that they wrote. What did he finally do? He threw away the books. He stopped travelling. "First and foremost," Buddha asked, "Am I putting to good use the senses that God gave or not? When they are not put to good use, what is the use of all that I have read? What is the use of seeing so many people (saints and great ones)? What is the use of hearing so many things? So, all of these are useless." First and foremost, he gave sound advice to the eyes, "Oh eyes, develop good vision. When that good vision is developed, good speech will come. When good speech comes, good thoughts will all come forth. When good thoughts come, there will be a good life." So, first and foremost he did everything external. Finally, Buddha discovered that only to control the senses is real spiritual practice. Without controlling the senses, if it is just like this, hearing everything that is heard, seeing everything that is seen, doing everything that is done, and eating everything that is eaten, then in what way will he live?
Praying To Be Blessed With Bliss and Peace In the past, in Shirdi there was a devotee named Chandubai Patel. Chandubai Patel, Mahalsapati, and Chandolkar, all of them were people of one set (the same group). Chandubai Patel was a great, ardent devotee. He was very rich. He got a lot of profit in all ways from his business. In addition, he was putting to good use all the money that came. One day a big businessman came to his house. He sat down. When the businessman came, Chandubai Patel was in his worship room. The businessman looked at his watch. Hours and hours passed. Chandubai Patel didn’t come out of the worship room. The businessman became disgusted. He got angry. As soon as Chandubai Patel came out, the businessman said, "Patel, you have as much wealth as you need. Your house is full of children. You have as much affluence as you need. There is no dearth of anything. Your health? It is your greatest wealth. Yet, even when there is everything, why are you still worshipping this God?" Then this Chandubai Patel said, "Sir, I am not worshipping this God for health, affluence, wealth, gold, objects, or vehicles. No, no, no! I have them. Why should I desire that which I have? I'm not so lacking in intelligence. I am desiring from God that which I do not have." The businessman then said, "Well, you have everything, isn't it! Why should you request God for so long?" Chandubai Patel said, "Sir, I don’t have bliss. Bliss is present in God! I am praying to God to grant me this bliss. I have comforts and there are all conveniences. But I don’t have peace of mind. God only is the basis for this peace. So, that which I don’t have is bliss and peace. I am praying to be blessed with bliss and peace." Then that businessman thought, ‘Oh! I thought that even such a great man was praying for more affluence and wealth. No, no! My intelligence is very much diminished.’ Why should man pray to God? He should pray to God to receive that which he does not have. Man has everything. He can achieve everything. Anything can be achieved. But bliss and peace are only from God, not to be achieved in all places (in the outside world). Therefore, pray to God for that only. That businessman recognized that Truth. Even from then Chandubai Patel was an ardent devotee. He used to go to Shirdi. Whenever he went, he used to give meals to others. What did he think about this? "Baba, I am not just giving food to anyone. I am giving to You only."
Easwara Sarvabhutanam. God is in all beings. (Sanskrit sloka)
"You (God) are in everyone, isn't it! Hence, giving to everyone is the same as giving to You." He used to call a few dogs and give them food also. However, that is not only a dog. Though in form He is a dog, yet He is actually God only. However, all the people in the world see with the outer vision and they call it ‘d-o-g’, dog. But the one who recognizes the nature of Atma will call it ‘G-o-d’, God. One will say it from this direction, ‘d-o-g’, and another will come from that direction, ‘G-o-d’. One is ‘in’ and the other one is ‘out’. The ‘in’ is illusion. ‘Out’ is freedom. To attain that freedom, he had faith that God is in all like that.
Nana Was a Great Devotee Nana was also a great devotee. He was also an ardent devotee. Baba was very much his life-breath. But what to do? There were a few worldly responsibilities. Baba Himself had said, "Continue to fulfill your duty." After some time, his daughter-in-law was pregnant. She was suffering a lot with labor pains. Then Nana prayed to Baba. Yet praying was no use (in lessening her suffering). Vibhishana contemplated on Ram’s Name for twenty-four hours a day saying, "Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram, Ram." Rama was so dear to him. How much Love he had for Rama! Hanuman asked Vibhishana, "Sita is the property of Rama, isn't it? When Sita has been here ten months, have you gone even once to see her? Have you taken any part in Rama’s work? Crazy fellow! It is not enough only to contemplate. The service has to be suitable to the remembrance." Then Vibhishana went running, chanting, "Rama, Rama, Rama, Rama!" He went to the shore of the ocean (to join in Rama’s mission). In that same way, Nana remembered the Name. But what to do? Though he thought of leaving his house and going to Shirdi, there was no other male member in the house to leave in charge of his daughter-in-law. He said, "Baba, You only are our Refuge! You are our Protector of all." As soon as Baba heard this well, a gentleman came there (visited Shirdi). His name was Shyam. Baba called Shyam and said, "Shyam, see here! Take this vibhuthi to such-and-such a village near Ahmadabad. Go there to Nana’s house and give the vibhuthi." Shyam said, "Where? It would take a day and a half to go there!" Baba repeated, "You go." When Shyam went out, a taxi (called ‘tonga’ or horse carriage in those days) was parked there. He sat in that taxi. The taxi driver said, "I am going to Ahmadbad." So it went. It went straight to Nana’s house. Hardly any time at all had passed. It all happened in a mere few moments. By the time they arrived and got down, then Nana came out and asked, "Dear one, who are you? Where did you come from?" He said, "Sir, Baba sent me. My name is Shyam." Nana asked, "Oh, did Baba send you? What did He say?" Shyam answered, "See here, He gave prasad (vibhuthi) and said to give it to your daughter-in-law." Nana took that vibhuthi and mixed it in water. He gave it to his daughter-in-law, and in a moment the delivery was complete. When he came afterwards and looked outside, there was no taxi and no Shyam. This Nana went about the whole town. The tonga wasn’t seen anywhere. Even Shyam couldn’t be seen anywhere. All of this is the Maya (bewildering illusions) that Baba did. (Applause) In the drama of Baba, there is no drama that He doesn’t act in. He is the best actor in all dramas. (Applause) So, Baba Himself came and acted all the parts and left here. Then only they gave the name of ‘Baba’ to the grandson that was born. He made all such numerous wonders happen to every devotee like this. (NOTE: The details in the above story are slightly different than what Swami has said on previous occasions. According to the book on the life of Shirdi Sai, entitled "Sai Satcharitra", the tonga came only on the last leg of the journey, not from Shirdi itself. The devotee sent by Baba took a train up to Jamner, then the tonga to Nana’s remote village. The tonga and driver disappeared, but not the devotee who brought the prasad. The devotee who brought the prasad was named Ram Giri Baba, not Shyam.)
Wondrous Instances When Kasturi and Swami were sitting upstairs, Swami left His body. Kasturi waited. There was Kasturi, Lokanatham, and Surayya in the room. Poor things! These three used to sit daily until I lay down to sleep at night. They were very ardent devotees. Poor things! All of them were ones that had absolute and complete faith. They were giving signals to each other. They shed tears. "What is this? Baba left His body suddenly just like that?" Lokanatham fell on the Feet and was sobbing, crying nonstop. However, Kasturi understood to some extent. "Don’t cry! We should be joyful about this. Someone might have cried and Swami went to remove their tears." He spoke and gave courage to them in that way. After two hours, I entered again into that body. Then Kasturi said, "Swami! We will not say to You not to protect devotees. So, go to any place You like and protect them. What authority do I have to say ‘no’ to You to protecting ardent devotees? So, You go. But just don’t leave the body. You can go there and see them while You are still here only, isn't it so?" That day, Kasturi, Surayya, and Lokanatham took a promise from Me: I will leave My body, but there will still be life in it. While still appearing here, I will go there, do their work fully, and return. I gave the word. For that reason, if I go anywhere today, I am going with the body. But at the same time, there is still life in this physical body. (Applause) Then, there are a few more wondrous instances. Numerous kinds of events are happening.
The stories of Vishnu (God) are mysterious, wondrous, and miraculous. (Telugu poem)
All is only history. It is impossible for one to tell that story. The sacred Atma is in every single human being. It is like sugar in syrup. In every human being, there is a pure mind like syrup. The sugar of Divinity has been mixed in the mind. The Vedas declare:
Raso Vai Saha. God is the essence of All. (Sanskrit sloka)
God is in the form of rasa. Without that rasa, man will become neerasa (weak).
Faith That Is Unwavering So, as the Divinity is in every human being, there’s no need to call anyone else and there’s no need to take the help of anyone. Yet, in the situation of not having any faith, others have to give help. No matter how many people give help, it is useless for the one without any faith. It is like decorating a dead body. What is the use in doing this, seeking others help? This has no use. Hence, first and foremost there should be at least this or that much of faith. Even that faith should be sacred faith. It should be faith that is unwavering. Then only anything may be done. Therefore:
Savitri, who brought her dead husband Back to life, Belongs to the sacred land of Bharat, isn’t it?
Chandramati, who extinguished the flames of fire With her power of Truth, Was born in Bharat, isn’t it?
Sita, who came out of the blazing fire unscathed, Was born in Bharat, isn’t it?
Damayanti, who burnt a wicked hunter to ashes With the power of her chastity, Was born in Bharat, isn’t it?
It is because of such chaste women of character, That Bharat has attained the reputation of being The land of plenty, prosperity, and rich harvest.
It is the Teacher of all countries, isn't it? (Telugu poem)
The land of Bharath used to be one that was in the position of a teacher to all countries. (Applause) Having been born in such a country of Bharath, growing up in the land of Bharath, living in the land of Bharath, if even this or that much of the culture of Bharath cannot be understood, then what is the use of saying one is a ‘Bharatiya’? However, the Bharatiyas of today only have the name of ‘Bharatiya’ and the vesture of a Bharatiya; but in the outside world, they are not even acting like birds. They are acting like animals. How will someone attain God with such behavior? All of the behavior of man of today is lower than that of an animal. It is lower than that of demons. Srinivasan mentioned in his speech the name of a demon. What is the name of that demon? Mahishaasura Mardini. (NOTE: ‘Mahishaasura’ is the name of the demon and ‘Mardini’ means ‘to slay or kill’. So, ‘Mahishaasura Mardini’ is the name of a goddess, who was created to kill the demon, Mahishaasura.) He said that today is Mahishaasura Mardini (the day dedicated to the goddess who killed the demon, Mahishaasura). Mahishaasura was not a demon. ‘Manishi’ (man), ‘asura’ (demon), ‘mardini’ (slaying): Man is a demon. Such a man has become a demon. So, the demonic quality in man should be killed. That Divinity should be developed to some extent. That only is Mahishaasura Mardini. Hence, with the passage of time, we should also change the connotation of a few words.
Ask Me And I Will Tell You Embodiments of Love! Importantly, you don’t understand how sacred is the entire history of our Bharath. If you don’t understand well, ask Me and I will tell you. It should not only be telling the meaning. I will also give the needed help. But no one can be seen who takes refuge in asking. They continue reading and come here already knowing it by heart. Greatly educated people also are falling to that fate. They study high education. But what is the use? They don’t even know the small things. They can't recognize matters of God. They are not even recognizing the Divinity within themselves. So, humanness is to recognize this innate Divinity and conduct oneself accordingly. Make distant the demonic and animal qualities in humanity. Develop Divinity and sanctity. Love is important for all of these.
Bhagavan ended His Divine Discourse by chanting the bhajan, "Prema Mudhitha Mana Se Kaho…"
